Just in time for summer- BTU Energy Efficiency Incentive Program
Bryan Texas Utilities launches SmartHOME energy efficiency incentive program

Cool off and save big this summer with SmartHOME, a new program designed by Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU) as an incentive for residential customers who complete energy efficient home projects. BTU customers participating in the program can earn up to 10 - 25 percent back on the installation cost of each qualifying project.

"The purpose of SmartHOME is to educate consumers about energy efficiency and encourage customers to reduce their costs," says Gary Miller, BTU general manager. "We want to make it easier for customers to improve the comfort of their home."

Miller adds that customers can do so by installing attic or wall insulation, solar screens or windows. These projects can be done by the homeowner or completed by a contractor chosen by the homeowner.

Any residential customer that owns an existing single or multi-family dwelling within the BTU service territory, and is billed on a residential rate, can participate in the SmartHOME program. In order to qualify, projects must meet the following specifications:
  • Solar screen projects - must be installed on windows facing east or west and block at least 65 percent of the sun's rays
  • Window projects - windows must be ENERGY STAR rated
  • Attic insulation projects - current home R-value must be between R-0 and R-22 and at least R-30 after project completion
  • Wall insulation projects - no existing exterior wall insulation and at least R-13 value after project completion
"Adding solar screens to your home is one of the most cost-effective ways to save on your energy bill," says Miller. "Since insulation and window projects can be costly, we wanted our customers to have a reasonable alternative to replacing all the windows in their homes."

Prior to beginning a project, homeowners need to submit a SmartHOME application along with pictures of current project conditions. Application and photos can be mailed to or dropped off at 205 E. 28th Street, Bryan, TX 77803; faxed to 979.821.5775; or emailed to smarthome@btutilities.com.

Customers can expect to receive their incentive payment(s) within 30 days of the final inspection.
